WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US Trade Representative Katherine Tai on Friday expressed strong US support for Lithuania and the European Union facing “economic coercion” from China during talks with EU Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis, USTR said in a statement.

The expression of support for Lithuania is the second this week from Thailand. Speaking to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis on Wednesday, Tai emphasized the US commitment to work with the EU and member states to address “forced diplomatic and economic behavior”.

Lithuania is under pressure from China, which claims Taiwan is under democratic rule of its own territory, to overturn last year’s decision to allow the island to open a de facto embassy in Vilnius under its own name.
