Starship Technologies: a look ahead to 2021. | by Ahti Heinla | Starship Technologies

Food chains will increasingly rely on innovative delivery alternatives as they strive to meet customer demand safely and efficiently. In September, we announced our first partnership with a major U.S. food chain, The Save Mart Companies, to enable the immediate delivery of their customers ’favorite products on demand to their doors.

Residents of Modest in California can now get their delivery of Sava Mart groceries via an autonomous robot

As students return to university, our robots have been busy providing contactless, fast and affordable delivery across campus. The number of autonomous deliveries is growing, setting records from week to week. We have plans to expand to many new universities in 2021.

As we move on to this next chapter, Lex Bayer is stepping down after being CEO of Starship from June 2018 to October 2020. During his tenure, the number of deliveries made by the company’s autonomous robots increased from 5,000 to over 500,000, from over 1 millions of miles traveled. We are proud of Starship’s growth and achievements during this period and we are grateful for Lex’s contribution and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

I will be the interim CEO as we look for the best person to lead the company into the future. Since co-founding Starship with Janus Friis in 2014, I have been so proud to have participated in the realization of our vision, including almost four years as CEO and most recently as CTO.

At the beginning of 2021, we expect to make our millionth autonomous delivery. We have come this far thanks to our innovative and world-leading robot fleet, but – more importantly – a fantastic team of people who have made our company what it is today. I can’t wait to share more news about our Starship trip soon.
