Shell’s seismic vessel leaves SA after a shipwreck

On December 28 (2021), a judge granted local activists a temporary ban blocking any seismic surveys until a decision is made on whether further environmental permits are needed.

No date has been set for that decision, and just days later a ship called the Amazon Warrior sailed back around the Cape of Good Hope, according to ship tracking data collected by Bloomberg.

A Shell spokesman could not immediately comment. The vessel should arrive at the destination marked as Las Palmas on January 18, data show.

Protests against research activity began in South Africa in November with the arrival of the Amazon Warrior.

It was set to explore an area known as the Wild Coast, a relatively untouched coast where whales are often spotted.
