How do you practice responsible astrology?

All the astrologers I spoke to pointed out confusing factors as one of the key reasons why astrological prediction never, ever 100 percent safe. “People have the misconception that an astrologer looks at a crystal ball and sees the future perfectly portrayed,” says Brennan, “but that’s not really what astrology is.”

Here’s where prediction it is becoming a favorite word that is oriented to the future of many astrologers: forecasting. Astrological prediction tends to describe the future more thematically or archetypically than concretely, and the vast majority of today’s astrological predictions fall into this category. Prediction has more room for different possible outcomes and allows for human error in interpretation. Horoscopes work this way, as do forecasts for entering the planet a year in advance, and it often happens in one-on-one consultations between astrologers and their clients.

As Sam Reynolds, an astrologer who began as a skeptic and served on the board of an international astrological organization ISAR, he points out, even the analysis of character through the natal chart is essentially a form of thematic prediction: “Based on looking at your character, [astrology] it can speak of what is likely to manifest, what we are dealing with “, an extension of Heraclitus’ saying that” character is destiny “. Character influences how we cope in the circumstances that life sets for us. “Fate has two hands: one is yours,” he says. “Astrology is learning how to do a hand that you can do.”

Working on the working hand of destiny is what an astrologer, teacher and CUSP co-founder of the application Kirah Tabourn works for himself and his clients. An astrologer focused on planning, Tabourn believes that foresight provides “more grounding in the present by having some idea of the pattern of the future,” including the precious gift of organizing one’s life. “[Astrological timing] it helps people feel like there is some structure, an order of things, ”she says. “It helps people make decisions.”

If astrology can help determine the “right time” to make decisions, it follows that astrology can also help us identify the “wrong time”. He was warned armed, as the old proverb says, and the cyclical nature of astrology is uniquely located to provide the forearm. “When researching historical and autobiographical astrological cycles, it is important to see where repetition occurs,” says writer-astrologer Palace Augustine. This can include cyclical rhyming difficulties, such as mental or physical health relapses, delicate topics that require skillful compassion whenever they appear in client sessions. Astrological foresight, guided gently and skillfully, can help to discern meaning and movement [going forward] looking at what is different, ”Augustin continues.

However, the knowledge that people make decisions based on astrology comes with the imperative to be as ethical as possible when translating celestial movements for clients. “Our clients and users of content are often in a situation to give a lot of weight to what [astrologers] let’s say, ”adds Tabourn. “It’s really important to keep that power dynamic in mind.”

The downside of the huge potential of astrology to create meaning? This makes the practice susceptible to abuse by careless types with a dubious commitment to honorable behavior. An astrologer who cares more about being right or being (un) famous than being helpful is at a very real risk of chasing sensationalism to the detriment of integrity. This results in people using astrology as an excuse to be ambulance hunters or to create viral content on social networks that causes fear. Astrologers without intentional training in counseling skills or trauma-based practices, even those with the best intentions, run the risk of unintentionally harassing their clients instead of supporting them. Some professional astrological organizations are trying to solve these issues through codes of ethics, but because there is no governing body that dictates who can and who cannot call themselves an astrologer, such codes are limited in their capacity to govern practitioners who behave irresponsibly. In addition, these codes, by their nature, cannot fully address ethical differences between cultures or generational divisions.
